WEST BENGAL – ST.MARY’S CONVENTYear of Inception : 2009
History : Having felt the need of intervention in the Northern India SMA sisters have initiated St. Mary’s Convent in the most backward districts in West Bengal. The mission station of SMA Sisters is Pransagar. It is one of the most remote villages of the district. It is situated 72 kilometres from the Malda Railway station which is one of the main stations in the district. The language of the people is Sandhali. Some also speak Bengali. Many hamlets surrounding the mission station are with tribal population. At Pransagar there is a catholic parish which caters faith formation to 17 villages nearby. Their occupation is agricultural, cutting trees from the forest. There are 17 substations for this parish. There are no schools in these villages. The Parish is run by diocesan priests. They are running a primary school which has more than 300 student tribes. SMA Sisters were invited by the Rev.Dr. Alphonse D’Souza the bishop of Raiganj diocese to work in this remote area. SMA Sisters started their mission in this remote area in the year 2009 in a rented house as their abode. Three SMA Sisters were appointed to help out in this mission station. Though there are not familiar with the local language they took it a challenge to learn the language both Bengali and Sandhali. Today the sisters are able to speak good Sandhali and Bengali. SMA Sisters started helping in the parish activities and in the school. They also visit the families in the evenings though there no transport facilities. They started a small dispensary for these tribal people and now with Shelter for Tribal children.
