MAJOR INTERVENTION OF THE CONGREGATION:

RELIEF MEASURERS DOING:

Every year during the period of October to December the cyclone will emerge due to low pressure and changing scenarios in the sea. The cyclone always causes drastic damage in the sea based city of Tamil Nadu. The highly affected place will be always from down south Tamil Nadu to the border area of Andhra Pradesh which covers the entire coastal area of Tamil Nadu. The entire above said area is located on the brink of Bay of Bengal Ocean.


AFFECTED AREAS:

➤ Chennai City

➤ Areas between Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry:

Like a lost year, on 30th of November 2023, this year the Cyclone called “FENGAL” escalated its dreadful wind and rain during the entire day on 30th November 2024 and made the people inactive. As a result heavy rain poured with high speed wind at around 80 to 100 Kilometers. Due to this natural calamity, electricity power was shut down for the whole day and the entire city was flooded. Due to heavy wind, around 80% of the huts had fallen out and the majority of trees fell down on the roof of the residential houses. Piousness sneaks and other dreadful creatures enter the residential area. Around 350 huts were intensively damaged.


AFFECTED AREAS:


SLUM AREAS OF MADHAVARAM:

During the recent Cyclone, the area was affected very drastically and the majority of people lost their huts and household belongings, especially clothes and utensils. Children are a highly affected group as they lose school needs and clothes. Around 100 huts have been damaged


DRASTIC AREA AFFECTED BETWEEN MAHABALIPURAM AND PONDICHERRY:

The FENGAL Cyclone has affected very drastically the coastal districts of Chennai and Pondicherry. One of our mission stations is doing socio-economic, education and health service to the rural people in and around Nerkunapattu which is very close to Pondicherry. Many families of our school students have been drastically affected. Majority of the people lost their huts and other basic requirements such as clothes, bedding, vessels etc., The people of the cyclone affected area went without basic needs such as milk, drinking water, food and other required needs.


DAMAGE CAUSED:

During heavy rain and wind, the majority of the huts were damaged. The following belongings of the people have been extensively damaged:

➤  Dwelling place especially huts

➤  Cloths, bedding & Utensils

➤ Books and other education needs of the students

➤  Some of the daily labourers lost their milk animals


RELIEF MEASURERS EXTENDED:

Our Congregation has contacted local corporate sectors and requested relief measures. Few generous people have provided rice to distribute to the drastically affected people. Our team of sisters went around the area in Madhavaram assessing affected people and distributed tokens. On 7th of December 2024, we distributed snacks and rice to people.
