History | : | Little Flower Convent was established at Nerkunapattu a village situated in Kanchipuram district. The vast majority of the population in this locality is landless labourers and belongs to Scheduled Cost. They make out their living by working in others farms for meager amount. However, since agriculture is being seasonal depending on the monsoon, all these farmers do not find regular jobs throughout the year. As such all the farmers remain unemployed for almost six months a year. It is much worse, when monsoon fails. Nerkunapattu is driven by Caste problems. 80 per cent of them are dalits, which means low caste and 15 percent of them are higher caste called reddiyars. Reddiars have land where the dalits have to work as daily wage earners. The Government has declared Nerkunapattu as drought prone area. And the literacy level of this area is less than 10%. More than 75% of them are forced to live below poverty line. People believe in superstitious beliefs rather than any scientific approach for health problems. In a nutshell, factors for all their miseries are illiteracy, poverty and unemployment. |
